Staying focused for more than 10 minutes: the complete guide
You sit down, open your course notes, read one sentence…
And your brain goes elsewhere.
Instagram, TikTok, random thoughts, the urge to move, to eat, to check a message.
You're not the problem
You're not lazy, and you're not "not cut out for studying".
You just live in an environment where concentration has become a massive challenge.
But the good news is that it can be trained.
Here's why you struggle to stay focused 🧠
1. Your brain is overstimulated
You jump from one video to the next, one tab to the next, one notification to the next…
And you're surprised that a chapter on constitutional law doesn't absorb you?
Your attention is trained to switch, not to settle.
Result: at the slightest hint of discomfort → you tune out.
2. You don't have a clear framework
You tell yourself "right, let me study a bit", without knowing what, or for how long.
And inevitably, after 8 minutes: you give up.
Your brain needs boundaries, clear goals, and closed loops.
3. You expect to be focused right away
Except that focus is like a warm-up.
You don't start at 100%. You build up gradually, and it becomes more fluid after a few minutes.
The trap
Most people quit before they've reached that "threshold".
How to (actually) get your focus back 🧩
🧘 1. Create real conditions for focus
- Phone on airplane mode, or in another room
- Tabs closed, calm atmosphere or instrumental music
- A simple and precise goal: "I'm re-reading chapter 3", not "I'll get ahead on my courses"
⏳ 2. Work in deep blocks, without micro-breaks
Rather than chaining interruptions, aim for blocks of 45 to 60 minutes of real focus.
And take a proper break afterwards: stand up, walk, drink water, change rooms.
No scrolling. No open tabs. No second screen.
Just you, your task, and a clear start / end.
📈 3. Don't aim for perfect focus
You'll probably zone out. And that's OK.
The real goal isn't "staying focused for 2 hours without blinking".
True mastery
It's coming back to your task every time you drift off.
That's true mastery.
What you need to remember
- You haven't lost your ability to concentrate
- But you need to retrain it, a little bit every day
- With a framework, tools, and real kindness towards yourself
Start small. Without pressure. But with intention.
You can get your brain back.
Courage and consistency 💪
