Bouncing back after academic failure
Academic setbacks are part of the university journey. They can be discouraging, but they don't define your future. What matters is your ability to bounce back and learn from these difficult moments.
Failure hurts, and that's normal 🤛
When you put effort into your studies, seeing a bad result come in hits hard. The frustration, the anger, the disappointment… All of it is valid. It's important to accept these emotions without trying to minimise them.
I still remember the day I thought I'd passed my year. I'd validated my 45 credits and I was relieved, until I received a message telling me one of my grades had been changed because of an error in an MCQ. My year had just flipped from a pass to a fail. The shock was brutal.
Stepping back: the key to moving forward 🗝️
What helped me not stay stuck in that mindset was disconnecting. I decided to step away from my studies for a while. I enjoyed life, I did other activities, and above all, I realised that university was only one part of my life, not the whole of it.
Bit by bit, the bitterness faded. I had accepted the situation.
Finding a new source of motivation 🔝
The real turning point came some time later, during a maths exam. Walking into the exam room, I felt an enormous difference:
- I was no longer stressed about failing
- I understood all the questions
- I was confident, calm and ready
Result: I had an excellent exam and got a very good grade. That moment was a revelation.
Info
I had finally experienced what it felt like to walk into an exam with full confidence, and I promised myself I would never go back.
